June 2004: First Workshop

Workshop participants dive right in and start carving blades.

Lâl shows off his "perfect blade".

Darin and company place the final touches on a set of blades.

Plywood circles to fasten the rotor blades together are cut out.

Holes are drilled in the rotor to allow it to be mounted to the hub.

Measurements are made for a mold to be used for casting magnetic rotors.

More work is done on the mold.

blueEnergy's workshop space on the campus of INATEC.

Darin works on a jig to assist in winding the copper coils for the alternators.

Darin works on the coil winding jig.

The completed coil winding jig.

Coil winding.

More coil winding.

The reusable mold for casting the stator. The copper coils are laid down in the mold, wired together, and then cast in resin.

Darin demonstrates how to wire the coils together.

Lâl explains the construction of the alternator.

The resin is poured into the stator mold.

The workshop in action.

Darin works on the mold for casting the magnetic rotors. The piece of wood with the teeth in the lower left is a spacer for the magnets.

Darin explains the casting of the magnetic rotors.

The magnetic rotor mold is cleaned out prior to casting.

Lâl and Darin cast a magnetic rotor in resin.

Lâl taps a hole in a magnetic rotor.

Darin and Ismael work on the hub.

The nearly completed hub. The hub is salvaged from a car wheel.

The wires coming out of the alternator carry AC current. The five bridge rectifiers shown convert this AC current into DC current which then can charge batteries. There are five rectifiers because the alternator is a 5-phase machine.

A magnetic rotor is mounted onto the hub.

The assembled alternator is spun by hand, producing blueEnergy's first electric current in Nicaragua!!!

The group celebrates blueEnergy's first voltage!

Jules and Hanna Beck design the tail vane.

Jules works on the tail vane lettering.

Jules and Hanna apply their artistic touch.

The fist test turbine is installed on the INATEC campus. This tower installation was temporary and was done to allow the workshop participants to see the turbine in operation.

blueEnergy's first wind-driven electricity is produced!! The alternator was producing up to 700W during this demonstration.

A thing of beauty!

The workshop turbine is lowered to be carried to blueEnergy's headquarters for the workshop reception.

Turbine in transport.

The turbine is mounted on a stand for inspection during the workshop reception.

The turbine meets with approval.
